a lot of history we have to celebrate. and then finally next saturday -- on this saturday, the sfmta will be joining with supervisor wiener, the supervisor for district 8, along with duboce park community for a ribbon cutting celebrating the completion of the church and duboce project. i've given you updates along the way of the various shut downs that were quite disruptive to that point and really to all of our riders on the west side of town. but we're coming out of this project thanks to the engagement of the community, we have a very good project. people are very pleased with the results from an infrastructure standpoint, much better and smoother, more reliable service. but also from a safety standpoint for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and muni riders a maytionv achievement. 11:00 a.m., church and duboce we'll be celebrating with the community the success of that project. and that concludes my report. >> thank you, director rifkin. i want to say on the 28th i hope as many members of the board will be able to join and go in the various divisions. we see it in a monthly basis
. this is my second time around as the capacity of sfmta and it is a pleasure to be here and served in the capacity some seven years ago and departed and became the directive of another agency in the central valley and i have been honored enough to be allowed to come back and serve in this capacity again. i want this body to know that we have heard many of the comments that were made today but both the public and the union. we certainly understand those comments and, we do not take them lightly. we have a significant purpose in this community, and we are working very hard to meet all of the needs of our riders daily. it is a complex, undertaking a balancing act, between operations and maintenance. providing service as a carrier of probably the largest number of persons per day in the bay area. so, i come here first and foremost to say thank you to this body for providing guidance and certainly funding for many of the projects that we undertake as we go forward. i also come to this afternoon i must do this to acknowledge my colleague, louis who and i go back over 20 years of service

oversee the sfmta which is the agency that is charged with implementing the city's transit first policy. and what our goal, what the city's goal and the transit first policy is is to make sure that everybody can get around san francisco, that everyone can get to where they need to go. it is an important part of making the economy of san francisco work, to making the quality of life good and better. but it's not just get around san francisco any old way. this is san francisco, and we have values that we bring to our transportation system. we want people to get around in a way that steps lightly on the environment. we want people to get around in ways that are enjoyable. and that really contribute to what makes san francisco special, such as our wonderful cable cars. but above all, we want to make sure that people can get around the city safely. it's no good to have a great transportation system if people can't get around safely. people need to not only be able to be safe, but to be able to feel safe, and nowhere is that more important than when you're on foot because that is when you're
